Three More 9/11 Victims Identified Nearly 24 Years Later
Nearly 24 years after the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, New York City officials have identified three more victims thanks to advances in DNA technology and ongoing dedication.
The newly identified include Ryan Fitzgerald, a 26-year-old starting his career in Manhattan; Barbara Keating, a 72-year-old grandmother on Flight 11; and an adult woman whose family requested privacy. These identifications bring the total confirmed victims to 1,653.
Fitzgerald’s remains were recovered in 2002, while Keating’s and the unnamed woman’s remains were found in 2001, but technology at the time couldn’t confirm their identities. Now, modern forensic science has finally brought closure to their families.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed sympathy for the families still healing: “The pain of losing a loved one echoes across decades. These new identifications offer comfort and hope.”
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham reaffirmed the city’s ongoing commitment: “Our promise to identify every victim remains strong, proving the power of science and dedication.”
With about 1,100 victims still unidentified, efforts continue. Each new identification allows families to find peace and properly honor their loved ones. As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, New York City honors those lost through memorials and relentless work to bring names back to the nameless.
