Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer and devoted father, was tragically shot and killed by a gunman in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday. Islam, a nearly four-year veteran of the force, was off-duty and working a security job in uniform when the attack occurred.
Islam leaves behind a wife who is eight months pregnant and two young sons. City officials remembered him as a man of deep faith, a proud immigrant from Bangladesh, and a true hero who died protecting others.
“He died as he lived: a hero,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, while Mayor Eric Adams praised Islam’s devotion to the city he loved.
Three others were also killed in the shooting, and one more remains hospitalized. The gunman, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, later took his own life after barricading himself inside the building.
Islam’s death is being mourned as a devastating loss for both his family and the NYPD.
