George Wendt, actor who played Norm on ‘Cheers,’ dies at 76

George Wendt, beloved for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on Cheers, has passed away at 76. A family representative shared that the actor died peacefully in his sleep at home.

“George was a devoted family man and a cherished friend,” the statement read. “He will be missed forever.”

Born in Chicago in 1948, Wendt began his comedy career at The Second City before landing roles in MASH*, Taxi, and Soap. But it was Cheers—where he starred in all 275 episodes from 1982 to 1993—that made him a household name and earned him six Emmy nominations. Reflecting on his audition, Wendt once joked, “I just had to look like a guy who wanted another beer.”

Post-Cheers, Wendt had his own short-lived sitcom, appeared in Frasier, SNL, and shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and George Lopez. He also acted in films like Fletch, Forever Young, and The Little Rascals.

He married fellow Second City alum Bernadette Birkett in 1978, and together they had three children. Wendt was also the uncle and godfather of actor Jason Sudeikis.

George Wendt’s warmth, humor, and unforgettable presence will live on through the laughter he inspired.
