Tamayo Perry, 49, a respected lifeguard and North Shore waterman, tragically died in a shark attack near Goat Island on June 23. Perry, who served with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, was also known for his surfing skill and deep roots in the Oahu community.
“Tamayo exemplified bravery and dedication,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “His impact on our community will never be forgotten.”
Perry was pulled from the water by fellow lifeguards but was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Emilia, also a surfer, shared that he passed doing what he loved, in the ocean he cherished.
Known for mastering the legendary Pipeline surf break and his friendships with figures like singer Jack Johnson, Perry’s death sent shockwaves through the surf world. “This one is hard to believe,” wrote surfing icon Kelly Slater. “You truly lived the life you loved.”
Perry will be remembered not just as a fearless surfer, but as a kind, committed protector of the sea and those who entered it.
