Authorities say a late-night dispute in Johnsonville ended in tragedy on June 24, when 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright lost his life. Nine Myrtle Beach teens have been charged in connection with the case, with another expected to surrender soon.
Investigators allege the teens acted together under South Carolina’s accomplice law. Some suspects, ages 17 to 19, remain in custody, while others have been released on bond as court dates approach.
Trey, a student-athlete at Johnsonville High who played both football and baseball, is remembered by loved ones as kind, bright, and full of laughter. A July 3 celebration of life drew family and friends together, and a fundraiser raised more than $6,000 to honor him. Sheriff TJ Joye called the loss “senseless,” reflecting the community’s grief over a young life cut short.
